Join the Trade Talks Board and the Commerce Research Library for our spring event on China’s engagement in Africa and its impacts on U.S. commercial interests!

This ITA Trade Talks event will explore different approaches the United States and China have taken on their economic relationships with African countries and what this means for U.S. companies and broader U.S. economic influence both present and future.

As Africa’s population continues to grow and security concerns expand, the United States’ relationship with African countries becomes increasingly important. AGOA (the African Growth and Opportunity Act) has dominated the United States’ trade and economic relationship with the African continent over the past two decades. During those years, China’s role in Africa has grown increasingly prominent, with China making significant investments in natural resources, infrastructure, media and communications, and cross-cultural education. Simultaneously, the United States and China have entered a period of enhanced competition and rivalry.

This Trade Talk will explore how competition between China and the United States plays out on the African continent in the trade and economic realm, and what direction our trade and economic relationships will take in the future, both multilaterally and bilaterally (ex. the U.S.-Kenya Strategic Trade and Investment Partnership).

Panelists:

  • Eric Olander, Co-Founder and Editor in Chief, China Global South Project
  • Florizelle Liser, President and CEO, Corporate Council on Africa
  • Joshua Eisenman, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Politics, University of Notre Dame

Moderator: Tyler Shields, Director of the Office of China and Mongolia, Global Markets, ITA
