BEA's Erich Strassner

Erich Strassner, Chief, Industry Applications Division, Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA)

Did you ever wonder how much economic activity is generated at factories, retail stores, educational outlets, and other industries? Which industries are helping the U.S. economy to grow and which ones are restraining growth. For decades, BEA has taken the pulse of the U.S. economy and reported on it each quarter.  But what wasn’t known – until recently – is how industries factor into the economy’s performance each quarter. Armed with this new economic intel, businesses, jobseekers and policymakers can make more informed decisions.

About Mr. Strassner
Erich Strassner is an economist at the Bureau of Economic Analysis and played a leading role in developing new quarterly industry statistics that BEA unveiled on April 25, 2014. These new statistics provide a more timely snapshot of how U.S. industries are performing and their impact on the overall U.S. economy. Strassner joined the BEA in 2001 and is an expert in measuring economic growth at the industry level. He’s also worked closely with the Labor Department’s Bureau of Labor Statistics to create a comprehensive set of industry and productivity statistics – providing a new tool in economic analysis. Strassner’s innovative thinking has earned him numerous awards including Silver and Bronze medals from the U.S. Department of Commerce.  To read more about Mr. Strassner, please see his full biography or a list of his publications.
